It was an All American final in D.C., and it was "all good" for Andy. Pulling from his brilliant semi-final win against Srichaphan, Andy fused power and placement to capture his 2nd Legg Mason Title.
From the first game, the Harvard grad made it clear his "comeback" was nearing its end, and James Blake was simply back. All expectations were met at the William H.G. Fitzgerald Tennis Center as the two friends displayed a high level of respect for each other"s game while stopping at nothing for the "W".
Wasting little time, Andy took Blake"s first service game, and with a 4-1 lead, the set appeared to be his. But James responded late in the second, evening the set at four all, regaining hope to repeat his only singles title. A few games later, serving at 5-6, James gave up the set on a missed overhead.
With a few battle cries, Andy charged into the second set, capitalizing on Blake"s unforced errors. Andy broke Blake at 3-4 to serve for the title. Following a phenomenal point at 30 all, Andy saved a break for his first championship point. James survived a 146 mph serve to take the game back to deuce. With his 18th ace of the match, Andy clinched the title, 7-5, 6-3.
In response to playing his good friend and countryman, Andy reflected "I hope it keeps happening, hopefully we can keep it going." True to their characters, Blake and Roddick were all smiles in the post match interview. James joked about eating bagels to up his return percentage and acknowledged Andy as a "credit to the sport."
The Legg Mason title is Andy's fourth title of the year and places him 1st in the US Open Series. Next up, the Rogers Cup in Montreal Canada.
